Eight of the top 10 most expensive places to live are in California, and New York City ranks 11th. Median home prices in San Diego are more than double the national median, costing $920,000, and rents are $1,842 monthly. In contrast, the magazine's list of best places to live was topped by Green Bay, Wisconsin, with a median home price of $279,000.
